HSS cutting material

Special tools made of high-speed steel or high strength high-speed steel ...

... with a high content of cobalt are still essential in certain machining tasks. The increased degree of toughness of the high-speed steel in conjunction with the extremely sharp, defined blade of the tool, offers clear advantages as opposed to solid carbide tools in the case of certain materials or processes.

The increased degree of toughness of the high-speed steel in conjunction with the extremely sharp, defined blade of the tool, offers clear advantages as opposed to solid carbide tools in the case of certain materials or processes.

Older processing machines in the large-scale manufacturing of brass fittings are often more reliable and profitable in many companies. Due to the very low speeds in conjunction with disturbing vibrations, high-quality carbide/solid carbide tools are more likely to bring cost disadvantages with them.

Depending on the application, Ochel normally manufactures HSS tools in the following material qualities:

Material content of cobalt Rockwell hardness
HSS up to 5% 63 -64 HRC
HSS-E up to 8% 65 - 68 HRC
HSS-E PMup to 10,5%66 - 69 HRC

The tool life of HSS tools can be greatly improved with various coatings carried out at specialist companies.

The most common coatings are:
- Type of coating Colour
- TiN gold-yellow
- TiCN blue-grey
- TiALN blue-black
- CrN silver-grey

HSS tools hardly differ from solid carbide tools from a pricing perspective. The marginally lower material price is determined by the thermal heat treatment required (hardening and tempering).

Thermal heat treatment and coating extend delivery times by approximately 6-8 working days.
